Over the past five months, Vietnam’s coffee industry has made headlines — and for good reason. Export turnover hit USD 4.7 billion, the highest ever recorded for the January–May period, even as global commodity markets stay unpredictable.

But behind the record numbers lies a much more important story: Vietnam is no longer just a volume player — it’s becoming a value partner. And for global roasters, retailers, and brands looking for reliable, high-quality coffee, this shift brings new opportunities.

What’s Driving the Surge?

Let’s break it down. While coffee prices globally have been high, Vietnam’s advantage isn’t just price anymore — it’s consistency, traceability, and responsiveness to market needs.

1. Strong EU and US demand: The EU imported over 367,000 tons of Vietnamese coffee (worth $2B), while the US imported nearly $300M worth — both markets rebounding after two slower years. EU free trade agreements have helped, but so has the rising reputation of Vietnamese robusta as a blend-friendly, cost-effective bean that performs well in espresso and instant formats.

2. Improved post-harvest handling and processing: Vietnamese producers — including our network at Vietnam Coffee & Tea Co. — have stepped up. From drying infrastructure to semi-washed and honey processing, we’re seeing a better cup and a more consistent roast profile. And global buyers are noticing.

3. Expanded markets beyond the “Big Three”: Exports to emerging markets like Algeria, Mexico, and South Africa surged — showing that Vietnamese coffee is now part of a broader sourcing strategy, not just a fallback for price-sensitive buyers.

4. More buyers seeking predictability: With climate disruptions affecting Brazil and Indonesia, many buyers are now turning to Vietnam for more stable and forecastable volumes. Even with a slight drop in volume, our country’s average export price rose 63%, indicating not just higher prices — but higher perceived value.
